Application Process to Join the Indian Air Force

The application process is a lengthy one. Aspiring officers are required to pass several rounds of written and verbal exams, attend various interview sessions, go through character verification and medical tests, apart from undergoing a two-year training program before they are inducted into the service.

Each year, tens of thousands of candidates apply for just 15,000+ openings. The recruitment process lasts over six months and has four main stages:

1) Pre-Medical Test (PMT),
2) Physical Efficiency Test (PET),
3) Written Ability Test (WAT),
4) Aptitude Test (AT)

#Step1 :Pre Medical Test (PMT): In order to join Indian Air Force after 12th , applicants must clear the PMT first. It is also necessary for all aspirants to get their eyesight tested by an ophthalmologist and submit a report along with their application form. If found unfit during any part of examination procedure, candidates won’t be considered further.

#Step2 :Physical Efficiency Test (PET): PET is conducted twice a year, once in June and another in October. These examinations are conducted across 20 cities throughout India.

Candidates need to reach venue 30 minutes prior to exam schedule. For male aspirants, height requirement is 162 cms while female candidates should be 157 cms tall. Chest measurement should not exceed 84 cms for males and 80 cms for females while waist size shouldn’t exceed 80 cms for both sexes respectively.

All aspiring candidates need to bring original copies of mark sheets and certificates, along with one passport size photograph. Those who fail to show up for PET will not be allowed to appear for subsequent selection processes.

#Step3 :Written Ability Test (WAT): Once you clear PET, WAT is next step towards joining Indian Air Force. WAT is held three times a year, i.e., January, May and September. Candidates who qualify PET are invited for WAT which is held at designated centers in 16 cities across India.

The duration of test is 2 hours and candidates are expected to complete a total of 100 questions. Questions are from English, General Knowledge, Numerical ability and Reasoning. There is no negative marking for wrong answers in WAT.

#Step4 :Aptitude Test (AT): AT is an online test which is taken only by shortlisted candidates who qualify PET and WAT. The duration of test is 3 hours and consists of 100 multiple choice questions from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English language. The test is conducted in a single session.
